A magnificent Victorian mourning brooch worthy of adding to any antique jewellery collector's prized possessions. Featuring a white banded black sardonyx to the centre complimented by a cross-shaped centre piece set with five seed pearls in yellow ivy leaf shaped mounts. The sardonyx is bordered by a yellow bead and rope twist edge and set within a black enamelled outer band decorated with a pattern of yellow enamelled ovals with is the in turn decorated with a repeat of the rope twist and beaded edge. The reverse shows a glazed compartment which lacks the original lock of hair but into which your own keepsake may be enclosed. The locket style back has a yellow border engraved with the words "In Affectionate Remembrance of Martha Santo. died Octobr. 8th 1870. Aged 36" Fastening with a brooch pin and hook, the brooch is also fitted with a loop for a safety chain if desired.
